Abstract
Increasing oil production in the Middle East has led to increasing discharges of crude oil. Five species of fish collected from the coasts of Gizan and Jeddah along the Red Sea were analyzed for aromatic hydrocarbons in the liver. Eleven different hydrocarbons were detected, and none of the species was free of hydrocarbons. Parrot fish had the highest liver PAH concentrations. The types of PAHs detected and range of values present in each species are reported. All these fish are consumed by humans, so measures should be taken to avoid human contamination.
