Abstract
An advanced biological water purification product Novel Mass Bio System (MBS) with 2-5 mm side length and 1.02-1.08 specific gravity was employed in this study to treat high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen in comprehensive industrial wastewater. MBS is a cubic particle mixed in a proper ratio of microbial liquid, bamboo powdered activated carbon and waterborne polyurethane gel. The comparison experiment between MBS and Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) carrier demonstrates that using MBS is advantageous due to better removal rate of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) 95% and total nitrogen (TN) 90%, while MBBR removal rate of NH-(+)(4)-N 80% and TN 75%, respectively. The study examined the feasibility of using Novel Mass Bio System and Anoxic/Oxic treatment process for advanced treatment of comprehensive industrial wastewater having high NH4+-N. The experimental results showed that this system could effectively deal with high concentration of NH4+-N, chemical oxygen demand (COD), TN removal and remain in a stable level when the operational parameters altered. The excellent performance was obtained at an HRT of 24 h. With an influent average concentration of NH4+-N 623-642 mg/L, TN 675-712 mg/L, and COD 1012-1124 mg/L, the effluent NH2+-N, TN, COD, could be decreased to 10 mg/L, 80 mg/L and 50 mg/L, respectively. The maximum removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, TN, and COD were respectively 98%, 88%, and 95%. Dosing with MBS can effectively improve the removal rate of NH4+-N, and carrier additive is simple. It is suitable for the old plants as the effluent can meets strict regulatory requirements for discharge level without the reconstruction of the tank. Therefore, the MBS is a non-toxic and promising cleaner technology for advanced treatment in engineering applications. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
