Abstract
The extent and magnitude of noise pollution was documented for a large sample of factories making up the Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, industrial complex. About 43% of the area surveyed experienced noise levels of 89 dBA or more, exceeding the OSHA standard of 85 dBA. There was no significant difference in the degree of noise standard violation between the different classes of industries. In nine factories, 100% of the work area exceeded the permissible level of 85 dBA. The maximum pressure level exceeded 115 dBA in 29 factories, indicating hazardous situations for workers. Recommmendations for improvement of the situation are made.
