•Methanol extract of A. lanata showed fine antibacterial activity against pathogens.•Methanol extract only showed outstanding antioxidant activity at 1.48 ± 0.12 mg mL−1.•First report: cytotoxic trait of methanol extract on HEK 293 cell line.•20 μg mL−1 of methanol extract showed nephroprotectivity (97.04 %) on HEK 293.•Methanol extract of A. lanata might contain potent bioactive component.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the phytochemicals, bactericidal activity, antioxidant capacity, and cytotoxicity of Aerva lanata flower extract. The results showed that methanol extract contains more number of phytochemicals (tannins, flavonoid, steroid, phenolics, quainones, and cumarin) than other solvent extracts. The increased concentration (40 mg mL−1) of methanol extract showed excellent antibacterial activity against opportunistic bacterial pathogens Staphylococcus aureus (3–20 mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (9–25 mm), Salmonella species (10–23 mm), Streptococcus pneumoniae (3–16 mm), and Escherichia coli (10–24 mm). Furthermore, the methanol flower extract of A. lanata also possesses outstanding antioxidant activity at 1.48 ± 0.12 mg mL−1. The methanol extract showed excellent nephroprotective activity (97.04 %) at 20 μg mL−1 concentration on cisplatin (8 μg mL−1) exposed HEK 293 cell line and it was almost comparable with the standard nephroprotective drug quercetin (8 μg mL−1). These findings suggests that the methanol flower extract of A. lanata contains medically valuable bioactive molecules may be used as cure for significant health issues of human kind.
