The paper is devoted to fundamental aspects of fuzzy modelling, namely modelling articulated with the use of methodology of fuzzy sets. Open issues are addressed which summarize advantages of fuzzy models and point out some methodological deficiencies blurring existing approaches. The problem of relevancy of fuzzy models and its direct impact on a suitable interpretation of derived results is studied in detail. Finally we analyze some particular fuzzy models developed in terms of relational equations.
