Abstract
The base composition of the glasses was B sub 2 O sub 3 78.1 - x, Na sub 2 O 21.9, xAl sub 2 O sub 3 (x ranged from 1.93 to 9.75). For Co-containing glasses, 0.05 g of CoO was added per 100 g of glass. Optical absorbance of glasses was tested within 15 min of irradiation by gamma ray. In Co-free glasses 3 induced bands (at 250, 330, and 550 nm) were observed. The intensity of the bands depended on the Al sub 2 O sub 3 content. In Co-containing glasses, 5 additional induced bands were observed, attributable to formation of radiation-oxidized Co sup 3 sup + ions. 28 refs.
