Abstract
Effective conservation and management efforts require well investigated scientific data. A genetic resource map would be one such data-bank that can help the planners and resource managers in conserving tha vast and varied but dwindling fisheries resources of India. The concern about the need of molecular biological study in fishes for developing transgenic lines and genetic resource mapping in India is outlined.
