Abstract
In a study of 44 patients with viral hepatitis, 11 had glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) normal enzyme activity while 33 had G6PDA-type enzyme deficiency. Individuals with G6PD (A-) type enzyme usually had severe hyperbilirubinaemia. It is suggested that the hyperbilirubinaemia is not only as a result of increased haemolysis of the red blood cells, but also as a result of the actual expression of G6PD (A-) enzyme type in the liver tissues as in the red blood cells.
