Abstract
Soil contamination with heavy metals from burning of scrap metal at an Antarctic construction camp in 1958-59 was studied. Soil samples from eight sites (including an uncontaminated reference site) at Marble Point and Pram Point in the McMurdo Sound region were analyzed using sequential extraction. Levels of lead, zinc, and copper found do not suggest serious pollution but demonstrate that such human activity has a definite, localized impact on the Antarctic environment.
