Abstract

A reversible, naked-eye sensor for mercury ions in aqueous and non-aqueous solutions is presented. The sensor changes from dark red to orange upon introduction of Hg(2+) ions. Removing the Hg(2+) ions from the sensor's surface by dipping it in a solution of KI causes the sensor to change back to dark red (see Figure).
