Abstract
. Omeprazole, a PPI is used for the treatment of peptic ulcers, comes in a variety of brands on the market. The increased availability of generic omeprazole medications has made it more difficult for healthcare professionals to choose the best option among the many options available. We selected six different brands of (20 mg) omeprazole capsules from a community pharmacy in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, to compare their simi-larity. General quality assessments, such as uniformity of content, weight variation tests, disintegration tests, and dissolution studies, were carried out according to BP and USP guidelines. All brands passed the USP compliance assessments of content uniformity, weight variation, disintegration, and dissolution. In terms of disintegration time, all brands did not exceed the USP standard of five minutes. All omeprazole brands were found to deliver more than 80% of their cumulative active ingredient concentration in 60 min. These findings suggest that the omeprazole brands available in Jazan KSA meet the BP and USP quality control specifications and are interchangeable.
