The voluminous nature of big data and technological limitations of storage technology employed in data centers has led to a gap between storage demand and supply. This article investigates multiple factors that lead to data-capacity gap in big data storage such as technological limitations of magnetic storage technology and shortcomings of data-reduction techniques. Furthermore, the article discusses the recent advances in emerging storage technologies to assess their potential in avoiding the gap.
