Abstract
Teaching about Islam and the Muslim world in social studies classrooms could be a challenging task for teachers. The task becomes more perplexing when the news media report violent acts in the Muslim world. Fortunately, teachers could teach about Islam and the Muslim world in a way that is noncontroversial and nondevotional. By using social science inquiry methods, the social studies teachers could teach about any world religion, including Islam. Teachers could apply the 10 thematic strands of the National Council for the Social Studies as a framework to explore the Muslim world as well as other world civilizations.
