Abstract
Good practice for the prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) of hepatitis B virus (HBV) requires a good knowledge of it by midwives (MW). The purpose of this study was to assess the knowledge of MW on PMTCT HBV.
Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study was conducted to Abidjan in January to May 2014. Were included the MW in the centers at the time of the survey who agreed to complete the questionnaire in our presence. Analyzes were performed by Chi2 test or Fisher test.
Results: The study included 197 of the 220 MW approached (89.5%). Among MW, 25% did not know that HBV is transmitted through vertical route, 27% did not know that screening for HBsAg is the 2nd trimester and 60.62% did not know that screening for HBV made by the qualitative determination of HBsAg. Less than 50% of SF know antivirals used in PMTCT HBV regardless of where they practice. The MW in the delivery room and hospitalization had better knowledge of vertical transmission of HBV regardless of job tenure. MW working in PMTCT had a better understanding of the effectiveness of the vaccine and its administration to the newborn at birth.
Conclusion: The results of this survey suggest the need to improve the level of knowledge of MW on PMTCT of HBV, especially in peripheral health centers.
