Abstract
Three novel, highly cross-linked terpolymers were synthesized via Mannich polycondensation reaction. The cross-linked polymers were characterized by different spectroscopic (FT-IR, Solid C-13-NMR) techniques. Thermal properties were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The adsorption experiments were conducted under various conditions (pH, time, initial concentration of metal ions and temperature) which revealed the efficiency of the synthesized polymers in the removal of lead(II) ions. Adsorption results from model aqueous systems indicated the superiority of BisphenolS-paraformaldehyde-piperazine (BSPF) cross-linked polymer. Further investigation on BSPF proved its efficacy by similar to 99% removal of lead ions from a real wastewater sample showing potential as an efficient adsorbent for industrial wastewater treatment. 2016 Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers.
