Abstract
Diverse solar energy applications are being demonstrated in research projects launched by the Energy Research Institute at the King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology, Saudi Arabia. Experiences gained to date with a 350 kW photovoltaic village project, solar-drive water desalination schemes, 350 kW solar hydrogen production system, and solar water heating units are summarized. Guidelines for future research and improvements are based on lessons learned. Extensive studies are needed to reduce component costs, increase conversion efficiencies, and improve sociocultural acceptance rates.
