Abstract
Ceramic/aluminum laminated composites can possess excellent properties and have unique applications. It is well known that aluminum cannot wet ceramics at the technically important temperature range 973-1223K, because of oxide formation on the aluminum surface. Hence aluminum can hardly be bonded to ceramics by conventional methods. Al sub 2 O sub 3 /Al, AlN/Al, Si sub 3 N sub 4 /Al and SiC/Al laminated composites were manufactured by a continuous casting bonding method. The bonding strength of the composites was measured and the interface of the Al sub 2 O sub 3 /Al and AIN/Al composites was analyzed by TEM. The results of the present work show that the continuous casting bonding method can prevent the formation of oxide at the bonding interface of aluminum and ceramics, and bond aluminum intimately and tightly on to Al sub 2 O sub 3 , AlN, Si sub 3 N sub 4 and SiC ceramics. High quality ceramic/aluminum laminated composite materials can be produced by the continuous casting bonding method. (Schematic of equipment and explanation of process included in article.)
