Abstract
This paper introduces analysis of the modulation performance of a high-speed multiple-quantum well (MQW) laser under intensity modulation. The study is based on a multimode model of semiconductor laser under direct intensity modulation. The model includes the suppression mechanisms of the modal gain, namely self-suppression and cross-modal suppression. The modulation performance is assessed in terms of the small-signal modulation response and the associated bandwidth. We present comparison of the modulation response of the total output with that of the dominant mode and side modes. Also, we assess the tolerance of applying a single-mode version of the multimode model to predict the modulation response and bandwidth.
