Fine powders with nominal composition of GeFe2Ox were synthesized by the aerogel method. The highly heterogeneous material comprises of small crystallites, not larger than 3 nm, in a mixture of amorphous matrix. Nevertheless, Mossbauer spectroscopy indicates that the Fe ions in many different environments in the calcined product undergo simultaneously an antiferromagnetic transition near 265 K.
