Abstract

Nurses were found facing several challenges in nursingpeople with mental illness, such as patients are more acute, demanding, andaggressive. These challenges may impact their role and practice. There is a little is knownabout the attitude of nurses toward people with mental illness.
This study aims atinvestigating the nurses' attitude towards people with mental illness and the socio-demographicfactors associated with attitude.
The data were collectedfrom 225 registered nurses using the Community Attitude towards Mental illness(CAMI) scale. The data were analysed by SPSS 20 software.
the results revealed that nurse's attitude towards people with mental illnesswere generally positive. Nurses' positive attitudes were associated with age, gender, years of experience, previous contact with people with mental illnessand position.
Positive nurses' attitude toward peoplewith mental illness is an important outcome indicator for the prospect to improvementwith treatment and prospect of recovery. The understanding of such a phenomenonmay also result in an increased possibility of provided care as well asrecovery and a better life for people with mental illness. Several suggestionsfor mental health practice, nursing education and future research werediscussed.
