Abstract
We generalized a theorem of Solomon and Tits which characterizes the Steinberg representation of a finite group of Lie type
G as the top homology group of the Tits complex of
G. We show that this characterization is characteristic-free. We also determine in what characteristics the socle of the Steinberg module is the trivial
kG-module which strengthens a result proved originally by G. Hiss.
