Abstract
A comprehensive algorithm for optimum design of built-up wide-flange sections is presented. The formulation comprises a general solution subject to compact-section and strength constraints, and a particular solution for various size constraints on sectional dimensions or a combination thereof. The design is based on the Load and Resistance Factor Design procedure of AISC specifications. The optimum solution to both parts is closed-form so that the section proportioning is direct and simple. The solution to the particular part is resorted to only when the section proportioning from the general part violates the specified constraints on section dimensions. The solution in either case is governed by activeness of moment alone, or moment and shear together. An algorithm for the optimum design process is presented and the process is illustrated with the help of an example problem which is implemented on a spreadsheet.
