Abstract
The kinetics of oxidation of L(+)arabinose by cerium(IV) have been followed by monitoring the disappearance of absorbance of cerium(IV) at 385 nm in absence and presence of surfactants. Whereas anionic. micelles of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) have no effect on the oxidation rate, a two-fold increase has, been observed in the presence of cationic, micelles of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The reaction obeys first-order kinetics with respect, to [L(+)arabinose] in both the media. The observed catalytic role has been analyzed in terms of Menger-Portnoy model. Various kinetic parameters (association constant of cerium(IV) species with CTAB (K,), rate constant in micellar media (k(m)) and activation parameters E-a, Delta H-# and Delta S-#) have also been determined.
