Abstract
Subjects or Study Selection
The National Library of Medicine, Washington, D.C.(MEDLINE-PubMed), the Cochrane-CENTRAL Register of Controlled Trials(CENTRAL), and EMBASE (Excerpta Medical Database by Elsevier) were searched from inception up to October 2019 for appropriate papers. The titles and abstracts of the studies obtained from the searches were screened independently by 2 reviewers.
Only randomized controlled clinical trials (RCT) or controlled clinical trials (CCT) study designs with human participants were included. Participants had to be periodontitis patients enrolled in periodontal maintenance care in good general health.
The included trials had to involve manual toothbrushes (MTBs), power toothbrushes.
(PTBs), or interdental cleaning devices, and had to evaluate the following outcome parameters of periodontal diseases: for primary outcomes, plaque index score (PI), gingival index score (GI), and bleeding score (BS); for secondary outcomes, probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and gingival recession (GR). KEY STUDY FACTOR This systematic review synthesizes the available clinical evidence concerning efficacy of the PTB versus the MTB on periodontal disease maintenance. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE The primary outcome that represented success of periodontal maintenance was the plaque index score (PI).
