Abstract
IntroductionAccidents and occupational injuries are one of the highest causes of disability and mortality, contributing huge direct and indirect cost of work related hand injury.ObjectiveTo determine the frequency, pattern and its associated risk factors and type of industry commonly leads to hand injuries.Materials and methodsA cross sectional study conducted at Social Security Hospital, Industrial State, Peshawar from October 2015 to March 2016 by using consecutive sampling having total sample size of 154.Proportions were compared using chi-square tests.Univariate associations were examined by logistic regression.Multivariate analysis done to adjust for confounders through STATA 13.1.ResultsThe mean age of the participants were 32±9.84 years.Ninety seven percent (n=150) of all the study participants were male.Out of total 154 participants, 16.23% (n=25) had hand injuries while 83.77%(n=129) suffered from other injuries.Laceration had high proportion among all the pattern of hand injuries 44%(n=11) which was followed by tendon injury 24%(n=6) while traumatic finger amputation was 20%(n=5).Matches factory were the highest proportion 32%(n=08) of hand injuries among all industries which was followed by pharma industry 16%(n=04).On univariate analysis, female were more likely to have hand injuries compared to males(OR1.7,95% CI,P-value 0.006).The middle aged workers were more likely to have hand injuries (OR1.6,95% CI,P-value 0.003) than old age(OR1.1,95% CI,P-value 0.009).Those who were using safety material where less likely to have hand injuries (OR0.5,95% CI,P-value0.005).By multiple logistic regression, the association attenuated but there was no significant changes compared to the univariate analysis(P-value 0.07)ConclusionInstructing the safety standards to laborers to use protective instruments, supervising young inexperienced workers and use of protective equipments can reduce the event of occupational hand injuries.
