Abstract
Allium humile belongs to family Alliaceae, is rich in sulfur containing compounds with distinct biological activities. The present study was designed to evaluate the phytochemicals profile, urease inhibitory and antibacterial effects of extract/fractions of Allium humile. The phytochemical analysis showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids and terpenoids. When studied for urease inhibition, the ethyl acetate fraction evoked marked inhibition with IC50 value of 45.5 mg/mL. The extract and all fractions also caused significant antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Klebsiella pneumonia with zone of inhibition in range from 12 to 18 mm. It is concluded that the extract/fractions of A. humile could be useful natural source of urease inhibitors and antibacterial agents.
