Abstract
We report a poliomyelitis outbreak in Sudan and subsequent efforts to eradicate the disease there as part of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The highest reported incidence was from Darfur and Equatoria States, where infant coverage for the third dose of oral poliomyelitis vaccine (OPV3) was reported to be 20% and 23%, respectively, in 1993. Limited outbreak response measures were implemented in Darfur State reaching 82% of 44 375 children under 5 years of age in Nyala town, 67% of 31 963 in El Fasher town, and 19% of 5300 in Zalingi town with at least one dose of OPV by July, 1994.
