Abstract
This study was commenced to assess the antiulcer effect of the ethanol extract of Zingiber officinale rhizomes (EEZOR) against pylorus ligation-, aspirin-, and ethanol-induced ulcer models in diabetic rats. Diabetes and ulcers were induced in rats as per reported methods. The ulcer index, free acidity, pH and total acidity in pylorus ligated induced ulcer model in diabetic rats was examined using variable dosage of EEZOR and the ulcer index, % protection, and antioxidant activity parameters were studied. It was found that EEZOR inhibited the acid secretion in diabetic rats (p < 0.001) as compared to control rats with diabetes and ulcers. EEZOR also showed significant mucosal protection and antioxidant properties. It has been concluded that the EEZOR protective effect against different model ulcers in diabetic rats may be due to the presence of flavonoids and polyphenolic compound in ginger.
