The refractive index of lyotropic lamellar liquid crystal, swollen by brine, is investigated using Michelson interferometry. The index variation with the volume fraction of dilution is linear. This result is discussed to determine an index characterising the dry lamellae and then to deduce the repeating distance of lamellar ordering. Our results are in good agreement with X-ray and neutron scattering measurements.
