Abstract
The efficiency of antibiotics has been lessened in the face of increasing resistance. The selection of a suitable antibiotic for treating of P. aeruginosa infections is compromised by the rising in the prevalence of multidrug resistant P. aeruginosa. This study aims to explore the occurrence of P. aeruginosa in different settings, and to reveal the antibiotic susceptibility pattern in Alkharj, Saudi Arabia. This is a retrospective analysis of the antimicrobial susceptibility that is carried out for all P. aeruginosa isolates collected in 2015 and 2016, in a public hospital in Alkharj. The rate of resistance of P. aeruginosa was high for penicillin antibiotics, some cephalosporin antibiotics, ertapenem, nitrofurantoin, and trimethoprim and was low for aminoglycoside, piperacillin, and colistin. Our findings confirmed that monitoring bacterial prevalence alone is inadequate; the corresponding resistance status of bacteria must also be considered to ensure the use of appropriate antibiotics.
