Abstract
Syntheses and characterization of a series of terminally functionalized n-alkanethiols with the general formula X-(CH
2
)
n
-SH are reported, where X─OH, NO
2
, CO
2
H, CO
2
Me, CO
2
Et, p-NO
2
-Ph, p-NH
2
-Ph, and n has a value between 5 and 12. These compounds are prepared for the synthesis of self-assembled monolayers on gold surfaces, which provides a simple approach to chemically modified surfaces with controlled interfacial structures.
