Abstract

Diffractive optical elements Talbot effect
We propose a simplified linear formulation of diffraction to make the synthesis of diffractive optical elements more accessible. The main emphasis consists of observing the diffracted field in certain planes in free space as a discrete sum of shifted and weighted replicas of the initial field at least for a wide set of diffracting objects. To illustrate the usefulness of the new formulation, we present several examples of application.
