Abstract
A new method of growing single crystals of pyrochlore type compounds of platinum (IV) and rare earths from the PbO flux has been used. The most suitable conditions under which these crystals were obtained, was with an excess of PbO
2 under oxygen pressure (12 bar), at a soaking temperature of 1290 °C, followed by slow cooling. Pb
2Pt
2O
7 single crystals were also formed when the crucible was allowed to cool below 950 °C.
