Abstract

Melanesia Sorcery
The belief that malevolent human beings are able to attack others through non-empirical means is widespread in Melanesia. In some societies virtually all deaths are attributed to sorcery; in a few Melanesian societies, however, most misfortunes are seen as supernatural punishment for sin. Discusses this difference and its social consequences. (Abstract amended)
