Abstract

Removal of trace metals from the water phase in the downstream course of the river Rhine probably occurs through sorption on to suspended particles and subsequent sedimentation. Conditional stability constants for the interaction between cadmium and suspended matter are very high (log K' = 6-7). It is suggested that organic binding sites play an important role in the accumulation of trace metals.
