A stereoselective total synthesis of xyolide is described employing MacMillan I--hydroxylation, Steglich esterification, and ring closing metathesis as key steps. The use of organocatalytic MacMillan I--hydroxylation to construct two of the chiral centers of the xyolide makes this approach attractive.
