Abstract
Mechanical alloying (MA) technique has been used to produce the amorphous phase of HfPd system. X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to investigate the structure of this system. No diffraction peaks from HfPd compound were observed throughout the amorphization reaction. The amorphous phase of HfPd prepared by MA technique occurred after 6 hours of milling. This MA time is unusually short for producing amorphous phases in an alloy consisting of early-late transition metals. The same amorphous structure was obtained for a sample of the same composition produced by FQ technique. The forms of the structure factors S(Q) and the reduced radial distribution functions G(r) of the MA and FQ samples proved that the obtained amorphous phase is genuine. The crystallization temperature and the activation energy of the amorphous HfPd alloy were obtained by DSC measurements.
