Abstract
In this paper the hydrothermal synthesis of NiAl-LDH is reported as well as its intercalation with 4-amino-3-isoxazolidinone (an anti-tuberculosis drug) using an ion exchange mechanism. The influence of the intercalation with 4-amino-3-isoxazolidinone on the structural parameters of the NiAl-LDH was studied. It was demonstrated that after treating with the drug the spacing between lamellae of the NiAl-LDH was increased. The FTIR confirmed the presence of 4-amino-3-isoxazolidinone, thus revealing successful intercalation of the latter. The morphology and porosity of the NiAl-LDH also changed as a result of intercalation. UV-vis measurements demonstrated fast release of 4-amino-3-isoxazolidinone from the intercalation compound at pH 5.1 which corresponds to the lysosome/endosome pH in the interior of the cell and very slow release at the physiological pH 7.4 during delivery. These findings make this intercalation compound a promising drug delivery vehicle. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
