3-(Iodophenyl) isocoumarins (7a-c) were synthesized by the condensation of homophthalic acid (5) with iodobenzoyl chlorides (6a-c) which on alkaline hydrolysis gave keto-acids (8a-c). (dl)-3-(Iodophenyl)-3,4-dihydroisocoumarins (11a-c) were obtained by reduction of keto-acids (8a-c) to racemic hydroxy-acids (10a-c) followed by cyclodehydration using acetic anhydride.
