Abstract
•Synthesis of three palladium(II) ofloxacin mixed-ligand complexes.•Formulas [Pd(OFL)2]Cl2 and [Pd(OFL)(AA)]Cl (AA = glycine or alanine).•OFL ligand chelated with Pd(II) ions through nitrogen of piperazine ring.•PdO (NPs) were synthesized through the thermal decomposition route.•Grain size and catalytic efficiency of PdO NPs were characterized.
Three new palladium metal(II) complexes with a second generation of ofloxacin drug (OFL) and two amino acids (glycine and alanine) as a mixed chelate were synthesized and identified using microanalytical, spectroscopic and physical techniques including elemental analyses, molar conductivity, infrared, electronic spectra, 1H and 13C NMR, XRD, SEM, EDX techniques and thermal analyses. The microanalytical analyses deduced that the molar ratios are 1:2 (Pd2+:OFL) as [Pd(OFL)2]Cl2 and 1:1:1 (Pd2+:OFL:AA) complexes as [Pd(OFL)(AA)]Cl (where AA is Gly-or Ala-amino acids). In these complexes, OFL chelate acts as bi−dentate via nitrogen atoms of the piperazine ring. The antibacterial activity of the complexes was investigated against Klebsiella, E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The data obtained revealed that the complexes showed greater activity against the four micro-organisms when compared to standard drug compounds.
