Abstract
This review first summarizes knowledge of the behavior of elements in the subduction system involved in the development of volcanic arc magmas. Then, compositional evidence is presented for the derivation of the subduction component in the magmas, transport of the subduction component to the melting column, depletion and enrichment of the mantle wedge, and processes in the melting column.
