Abstract
Cyclosporin A (CyA) is a powerful immunosuppressant, and its use in organ transplantation has been encouraging. However, nephrotoxicity may be its major side-effect. This was first noted in its use in renal transplantation, and has also been seen in hepatic and pancreatic transplantation, and in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and primary biliary cirrhosis. The early deterioration in renal function after starting CyA is reversible, but there have been no studies of its long-term administration. The authors studied the long-term effect of CyA treatment on renal function.
