Abstract

Using thermodynamic data, the equilibrium constant for dissociation of solid ammonium chloride aerosol into gaseous hydrogen chloride and ammonia has been calculated. The existence of solid ammonium chloride aerosols is thermodynamically possible at temperatures and concentrations observed in the troposphere, but significant gas phase concentrations of hydrogen chloride and ammonia will also be present.
