Abstract

Ultraviolet spectral measurements, and a reinvestigation of previous results have shown that many amides are not Hammett bases; the implications to previous work on basicity determinations and kinetic studies are discussed. A simple experimental criterion is described for determining whether a base is of the Hammett type.
