Abstract
Pulmonary surfactant was collected from the lungs of 20 adult male camels and 14 young camels after slaughter and was analysed for surfactant - associated proteins. The total surfactant protein levels were found to be 98.12 and 128.64 mu g/g lyophilised surfactant powder, respectively. The protein fractions detected were albumin, SP-A, SP-B and SP-C and their values in young and adult camels were 56.42+/-2.46 and 76.88+/-4.67, 29.56+/-3.11 and 34.52+/-2.17, 0.89+/-0.46 and 4.36+/-0.68, 5.76+/-1.49 and 9.86+/-2.64, respectively. There was a tendency of increase in these fractions with age.
