Two new monoterpenes, varthemic acid I (1) and varthemic acid II (2), in addition to 12 known compounds were isolated from the aerial parts of Varthemia iphionoides (Asteraceae family) growing wild in Jordan. Structural elucidation of all isolated compounds was performed utilizing extensive spectroscopic data including UV, IR, MS, and NMR (1 & 2D) spectroscopy. The absolute stereochemistry of compound 1 was determined by X-ray.
