April 2006, Vol. 96, No. 4 SAMJ SCIENTIFIC LETTERS 308 To the Editor: Over the past 2 decades at least 4 major global conferences have highlighted the importance of maternal mortality. These include the 1987 Safe Motherhood Conference held in Nairobi, the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development held in Cairo, the 1995 Beijing Conference on Women, and the 2000 UN Conference on Millennium Development Goals (MDG) held in New York. As a result of a multitude of factors, including South Africa's participation in these conferences, reduction of maternal mortality has been given high priority in this country ..
