•SeNPs@PVA/Chitosan/ synthesized by green method.•XRD indicating the interaction between SeNPs and PVA/Chitosan.•Increasing of SeNPs content result in the increase of the antibacterial activity.
There is a need to develop a type of wound dressing with antibacterial properties. In this work, a polymeric blend based on chitosan (CS)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) containing different concentrations of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) were fabricated via casting technique. The obtained films were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The surface morphology showed that blend films were formed as fused hexagonal grains, while SeNPs were detected as rode shapes with diameters in the range of 0.8 μm. It was observed that the maximum height of the roughness (Rt) was increased from 65.3 to 169.5 μm and deteriorated to 38.6 μm for CS/PVA, 0.1SeNPs loaded CS/PVA and 0.2SeNPs loaded CS/PVA, respectively. The resultant also illustrated that, the fabricated nanocomposite has the ability to kill and inhibit the growth of tested pathogenic E. coli and S. aureus bacteria.
