Abstract
Objective: To detect in vitro efficacy of antimicrobials Quinupristin-dalfopristin and linezolid against methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates.
Methodology: One hundred MRSA isolatea at the department of Microbilogy, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Rawaipindi and department of Microbiology, Army Medical College (AMC), Rawalpindi, were studied. MRSA were identified by using 1 mu g oxacillin disk and confirmed by Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for mecA gene. MRSA isolates were then tested aganist Linezolid & Quinurpristin-dalfopristin disc using disk diffusion method, as per CLSI guidelines. After over night incubation at 35 +/-degrees C zone of inhibition around the disc was read and interpreted.
Results: Out of 100 isolates, none were found resistant to either Linezolid or Quinupristin-dalfopristin.
Conclusions: These two antimicrobials streptogramin quinupristin-dalforpristin, and the oxazolidinone linezlid, have good in vitro activity aganist MRSA. These drugs are promising therapeutic options in an era of rapidly growing antibiotic resistance.
